Ida Johansson Ringvold, Norwegen, Oslo

My name is Ida Johansson Ringvold.
I first came to Langbinsi from Norway in 2012 as a volunteer for the Presbyterien Clinic.

My last stay in Langbinsi was in March 2016. During my first visit to Langbinsi, the Midnight Sun International School did not yet exist. The construction of the school had just started.

I was very excited to come back and see how the school was progressing. It was already looking really good, but there was still room for improvement. In Norway, I sold spices and collected money from my friends and family for the Midnight Sun International School, but I didn’t know what I wanted to do with it yet.

Many of the school desks were falling apart. Probably mainly because the floors were only made of clay. I spoke to the principal and my guest teachers and together we decided to buy new school benches. It took a welder three weeks to make 80 metal school benches, which are more durable than wooden ones.

Three outdoor classrooms were concreted and some walls were built so that it is now easier to teach there. The teachers wanted good quality chalk and so we bought it.

I brought footballs for the children, but they were unusable after just a few days. With the last money we bought 32 soccer shirts, shorts and seven footballs – they were all so happy.

In Ghana, even a small amount of money can make a big difference and it feels great to see the changes.
